What is Nexium used for?
Nexium (generic name: Esomeprazole) is a medication belonging to the group of proton pump inhibitors. This medicine is used to treat such conditions, triggered by excessive stomach acid production, as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Nexum can also be used as supporting therapy for healing of erosive esophagitis (damage to esophagus caused by stomach acid), and also as a preventive therapy in gastric ulcer, caused by the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or by helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection.
The action of this medicine targets secretion of excessive amounts of acid in the stomach. Nexium is not designed for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms.
How to take Nexium
For complete treatment of your condition, you should take the medication for the full length of time, as prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve earlier.
The usual duration of a course is 4 to 8 weeks. If your doctor concludes you need additional healing time, he/she may recommend a second course of Nexium. Take each dose of Nexuim with a full glass of water, at least 1 hour before a meal. All the details about the use of the medicine can be found in its prescription label.
You should not take Nexium if you have low levels of magnesium in your blood or severe liver disease. In case you develop any of the flowing symptoms of low magnesium while using Nexium, let your doctor know at once: seizure, choking feeling or cough, muscle weakness, muscle cramps, jerking muscle movements, confusion, dizziness, fast or uneven heart rate. In patients of age 50 and older, who have osteopenia or osteoporosis (low bone mineral density), long-term use of Nexium at high doses carries the risk of bone fracture in the wrist, spine of hip.
You should not take Nexium with nelfinavir or atazanavir (medications for HIV/AIDS treatment) as well as blood thinners, diuretics, Cilostazol, Copidogrel, Diazepam, Digoxin, Ketoconazole, Saquinavir or iron.
Though not expected to harm an unborn baby, tell your doctor if you are pregnant/plan to become pregnant or are nursing a baby while taking Nexium.
